강 주변의 풀에 의해 만들어진 그림자는 끊임없이 계속되는 그림자, 즉 그림자의 어두운 영역으로 다시 흘러내리는 영원한 원형적 그림자이다.
하강하는 강물은 루시퍼로부터 도망친 다른 순례자들이 “물줄기가 구멍을 낸 바위의 울푹 패인 곳을 통해… 아래 그 길로 흘러내는 작은 개울 소리(지옥편 34곡, 129-131),
가까스로 지옥의 계곡을 빠져나올 수 있게 하는 소리를 따라 올라갈 수 있는 길을 닦을 것이다. - 단테와 융, 연옥편 154
단테가 마지막으로 루시퍼의 다리를 통과해 연옥으로 올라가는 그 전환의 지점이 궁금했다. 지옥이 어떻게 연옥으로 변하는 지 오랜시간 궁금했다.
Lethe carries the last impurities of sin back to Hell.The shadows formed by the grasses along its banks are eternal—shadows of shadows, ever flowing back into that dark realm.This downward-flowing water, like a stream carving its path through rock, echoes with the faint sound of a trickle—“Through the hollow made by the stream that wears the stone…”a tiny brook that trickles down that sloping way…” (Inferno, Canto 34, lines 129–131).It is this faint sound that leads those few pilgrims who have fled Lucifer’s grasp toward a narrow path—a way out of the chasm of Hell.
