올바른 길을 잃고 어두운 숲 속을 헤메던 것 같은 마음이었던 그때 사슴은 ‘Do you find your happiness?’
“Midway upon the journey of our lifeI found myself within a dark forest, for the right path had been lost.”— Dante Alighieri, Inferno, Canto 1, Lines 1–3
To speak of the moment when one descends into the forest is nearly impossible. As Jung points out, “Ultimately, we have no idea how things happened.”The forest is not a place, but a state—a slumbering condition of being,a profound unawareness of the self. And this ignorance can lead to what Jung calls “the second death”:not the death of the body, but the death of the spirit—when the soul loses its way in matter, or is broken by it.(Dante and Jung, Vol. 1, p.120)
When I painted this piece, I, too, was drifting through such a forest. Not fully awake, not truly alive—as if dozing through life in a state of quiet loss.In that darkened time,it felt as if the deer was asking me gently:“Do you find your happiness?”
