심연을 마주하던 때

‘라이프 오브 파이‘라는 영화를 무한히 반복 해서 보던 어느 날 아침 눈을 뜨면서 꿈결에 영화 속의 고래가 튀어 올라오는 장면이 떠올랐다.

고래가 떠오르면서 물 속으로 곤두박질 쳐지는 주인공처럼 현실에서의 나도 마치 물속에 곤두박질 쳐진 듯한 느낌이었다. 온 몸에 소름이 돋을 정도로 솟구치는 고래의 검은 피부와 육중한 무게감이 실제처럼 느껴졌었다.

나의 내면에서 솟구쳐 올라왔던 고래의 존재와 물 속에 곤두박질 쳐졌던 나의 의미를 지금도 나는 되새기고 있다. 그리고 김산춘 신부님의 글이 마음속 깊이 공감되었다. 신앙심의 상승과 50여년간 살아왔던 나의 자아가 하강을 하던 순간으로 기억된다.

One morning, after endlessly rewatching the film Life of Pi, I awoke with a vivid image from the movie still lingering in my mind: the moment when a whale bursts forth from the sea.As the whale rose and then crashed back into the depths, I too felt as if I were plunging headfirst into the water of my own reality.The dark, gleaming skin of the whale and its immense, almost tangible weight sent chills through my body—it felt overwhelmingly real.

To this day, I reflect on the meaning of that whale that surged up from within me, and of myself who plummeted into the depths.Fr. Kim’s writing resonated deeply with me.It felt like a moment in which my sense of faith was rising, even as the self I had lived with for over fifty years was descending.
