“I even dared to hope that I might escape—but then,a new terror appeared before me:a lion, its head held high, ravenous with hunger and wild with rage, its very presence seemed to make the air tremble.”— Dante Alighieri, Inferno, Canto 1, Lines 43–48
The lion within me.
In The Divine Comedy, the beasts Dante meets in the dark forest—especially the leopard, lion, and she-wolf—are said to symbolize thresholds to the unconscious, a descent into the depths of the self. The lion, in particular, has been interpreted as a force of human desire—a guardian of the gate to the inner abyss.
And so I asked myself:What desire holds me captive?
Throughout the months I painted this work,I found myself returning to that question again and again. What kind of painting am I meant to create?
After months of staring into the lion’s eyes—I chose to let go of my worldly ambitions as an artist.
And instead, I said to myself:Let me follow the path inward.Let me walk the road of the soul.
